Steven Feldmann Obituary

Steve Feldmann, 67, of Clinton New Jersey, died on Monday April 22, 2024.

Steve was born in Washington DC in 1957 to David and Marjory Feldmann.  He grew up in Maryland with three siblings- Karla, Ilene, and Andrew.  He graduated with a BS in Geology from University of Maryland, then moved to Ohio to attend Kent State University for his Masters, He worked in the oil business “out west”, then later in environmental consulting in New Jersey where he lived 35 years.

First and foremost, Steve loved people and could find the good in everyone.  He’d strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere with genuine interest in what they had to say - he’s the guy you’d sit next to on a plane, talk with for the entire flight and be happy you did. A random conversation in a laundromat led to both an enduring friendship and an introduction to the person that became his wife of 30 years – his proof that being open to people is a wonderful thing.  He could remember the names and faces of just about everyone he’d ever met, and always made a special effort to stay in touch with people from all parts and times of his life.

Steve also had a tremendous sense of humor, an exceptionally quick wit, and loved it when he could make the people around him laugh, which he often did.  He was a self-described repository of useless facts which made him a great partner on game nights, until the topic became popular culture, which didn’t interest him one bit.  Once a reluctant pet owner, he was happy watching a classic movie on TV with a cat curled up on his lap. He loved history, jazz, good food and evenings with friends most of all.

He was proud of being a geologist and endured endless rock jokes from his friends and family, retaliating by telling you more than you ever wanted to know about some formation or geologic process.  He hated the paperwork and deadlines of being a consultant, but loved the field work and the science; you could always tell when he had some interesting situation to work through when he’d be surrounded by maps and books.

After retiring from a career in geology in early 2022, Steve set out to do good in the community, volunteering with Meals on Wheels and Friends of the Hunterdon County Library, to learn new things he’d put off during his working years, including Tai Chi, Hebrew, and cooking, and to do more of the things he enjoyed: drumming, reading, traveling.  Those things were sadly cut short by a cancer diagnosis late that same year.

Steve is survived by his wife Jennifer and son Jesse, brother Andrew and sister Ilene, nieces Alison and Danica, nephews Michael and Patrick, sisters Andrea, Peggy and Jeannie, and step-mother JK.  He is preceded in death by his sister Karla and his parents David and Marjory.

A graveside service is being held at 2 pm on Friday April 26 at Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney, MD.  It will be followed by a celebration of Steve’s life at the home of Andrew Feldmann and Sharon Bender.

Contributions in Steve’s name can be made to Meals on Wheels of Hunterdon, 5 Walter E. Foran Boulevard, Suite 2006, Flemington, New Jersey.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
